An Egg-citing Week in EYFS!

Our Early Years children have had an especially egg-citing start to the term, with the themes of Easter and Spring sparking all sorts of wonderful learning and discovery.
On Tuesday, the children in EYFS had a very special delivery — duck eggs! The children have been completely fascinated by them. They have loved checking in on the incubator each day, keeping a close eye on the eggs and waiting patiently for something magical to happen. On Wednesday and Thursday, the big moment arrived — the eggs started hatching, and we now have some very adorable ducklings to care for!
This has been a great opportunity to talk about how the children have a responsibility to show concern and look after living things. As part of our PSHE learning, they have helped to get everything ready for the ducklings — setting up their brooder box with food, water, and straw to make sure they feel at home. It has been so lovely to see the children showing love, care and kindness as they take on the role of duckling carers.
Alongside this, they have been learning about how plants grow. The children have been reading the book Seed to Plant, which has helped them understand what seeds need to grow and how we can help them. The children have impressed their teachers with some wonderful instruction writing about how to plant a seed.
And there’s more to come! Very soon, we will be diving into the story of Woolly Bear Caterpillar, where the children will explore how a little caterpillar transforms into a beautiful butterfly. This is always such a magical topic, and a brilliant way to keep encouraging their natural curiosity about the world around them.
Spring really is a special time in EYFS — full of new life, wonder, and opportunities for hands-on learning. It’s a joy to see how much the children are enjoying these experiences and the thoughtful questions they are asking along the way.
We’ll be sharing more updates (and lots of photos!) in the coming weeks, so keep an eye out!
